Raigmore
Budget: £6 million
Raigmore Hospital, Inverness.
Linear Accelerator Project This £6M+ investment in cancer services will provide accommodation for 2 new linear accelerators, and an upgrading of the whole Oncology Department at Raigmore Hospital. Building work started in February 2008 included bunkers for 2 new linear accelerators and accommodation for a new CT simulator as well as the upgrade of supporting facilities.
During the creation of the two new treatment rooms, clinical service was maintained at all times using the existing treatment facilities, which involved a complex strategy of phased works and decanting being programmed into the works contract. Patient and staff facilities were also enhanced in the development planning, with care taken in design to create a pleasant and calming internal environment for this particularly sensitive patient group.
Large roof lights were incorporated to maximise daylight, and the natural materials utilised whenever possible. Externally the expression of the massive concrete structures needed containing the treatment process was softened by the careful detailing of natural larch cladding, procured locally from sustainable sources.
